In the ghetto's of 50's Jamaica a little know revolution happened in music: The Sound System. In the ghettos of Kingston, DJs would load up a truck with a generator, turntables, and huge speakers and set up street parties. This radio show will cover sound system culture and it's revolutionary use of music to bring people together!

This show will have EOTO's Lotus sculpture that they preform in. A video DJ will project images on the sculpture to suit the mood of the performance. It's going to be the coolest thing you've ever seen.
The Pixies mixed with Justice, The Police mixed with The Beatles, and Kiss mixed with Buddy Guy....that's the kind of craziness this show is about. Mashup artists are about making things that should not fit mix like Eggos and peanut butter.

What It's All About
This Friday the 27th at 8pm, The Black
Keys and Arctic Monkeys will play a sold out show at the Chaifetz
Arena. The two bands will be traveling from Austin, Texas to our
historically blues friendly town of St. Louis on the day before the
show. They are currently in a US tour together that will end in the
middle of May. The Black Keys will then hop the pond to start a
European tour as the Arctic Monkeys continue in a US based direction.
It's strange to note that both bands will travel from packed stadium
to packed stadium charging between forty and fifty dollars and call
themselves indie rock. It's a sign that the term alternative rock
has been replaced by the term indie rock. Once more, the terms are
becoming about equally vague.
The Black Keys are currently riding
high on their El Camino album which made it to second highest spot on
Billboard's top 200 list. El Camino was produced by the Danger
Mouse, Grammy producer of the year in 2011. He also produced The
Grey Album: a mash-up album that combines The Beatles' White Album
with Jay Z's Black Album. The Grey Album gained notoriety when EMI
attempted to halt distribution while Jay-Z and Paul McCartney had no
problem with the project. The Grey Album was then released to
protest the practices of major labels for free on a day dubbed Grey
Tuesday. Ironically, The Black Keys are under a label called V2
which is owned by EMI.
The Arctic Monkeys released a purple
7" on Record Store Day last Saturday the 21st. Their newest
full album release, Suck It and See, made it to number one on British
charts and 14 on Billboard's top 200. The Arctic Monkey's sound has
changed a great deal in their last two albums. Whatever People Say I
Am, That's What I'm Not and Favourite Worst Nightmare are both witty
and edgy with a dancable beat. There most recent, Humbug and Suck It
and See, are atmospheric, mellow, deadened when compared the the
first two. Early Arctic Monkeys music is characterized by an almost
constant use of British slang, their new albums are strikingly
without that slang. The Arctic Monkeys have moved from energy packed
beginnings and perhaps found a larger audience for their music.
The Black Keys are seven albums into a
ten year career. Their early albums are filled with raw blues rock
sound and covers of their favorite blues songs. Around the time of
their fifth album, Attack & Release, they started to come into a
sound that was more their own. Their sound moves freely from
blues-y, folksy, and psychedelic tones. Brothers and El Camino show
a really solid and unique sound starting to emerge.
If this week's show is anything like
other shows this year, the Arctic Monkeys are great openers and will
play songs that were well received in the US and then get into there
newer catalog. The Black Keys will rock through their catalog
emphasizing their more recent hits. There stage effects will be
awesome, but I won't ruin them here.
It's an unwritten rule of concerts
that you don't listen to the music of a band you're driving to see.
However, this concert is at the Chaifetz Arena, so you will probably
be walking. Nevertheless, don't listen to these songs on your phone
on the way to the concert. Listen to From the Ritz to the Rubble
from Arctic Monkeys early stuff and Don't Sit Down Because I've Moved
Your Chair from their most recent album. Listen to Busted from The
Black Keys first album to experience their early grit and grime.
Watch the music video to Lonely Boy from El Camino to get some
dancing tips from some old guy.
On the 21st of April, several KSLU members and friends went to the Mountain Goats show for KWUR's Awareness Week on the Washington University campus at the Gargoyle. This is a short audio review of that concert.
The KSLU community really came through today (2.11.12) to put together a really fun day of radio goodness. Sam took the 8am early bird shift before regular programing handled it until 7pm. Then the party really started with some munchables. A sizable group of food getters arrived and rocked out to a 90's trivia showcase won by our own Wilson, Bryan came in second place. During this Trivia event Sam put the mobile DJ equipment together and played the macarena on loop for about an hour while everyone danced with awesome laser lights. Jason, Matt, Simon, Charles, and Kate played various instruments in the recording studio including a bari-sax. Training videos were filmed and the last men standing were Brett, Charles, Jason S., Matt, and Jason M.
To listen to the audio version, go to the bottom of the post.
Behind invasive pat-downs and metal detectors, a spectacle raged in perpetual motion.
DJs manipulated towers of electronic instruments, high-powered lasers traced patterns in the fog of smoke machines, and fire and belly dancers hypnotized the crowd. And yet, the real show was the glow stick-adorned mass of fans that pulsed with life.
Winter Warpdrive is an electro-music festival, currently in its seventh year and its largest venue. With a humble beginning in abandoned warehouses, the festival has come a long way and pulled out some big name artists in recent years. It all went down last Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Family Arena in St. Charles.
This year the festival featured Eoto, a unique Dubstep duo that does every set live and improvised, like Jazz musicians of old. Jason Hann pounded on the drums while Michael Travis used a combination of live looping, keyboard and guitar.
In stark contrast with classic rock musicians, electro artists are not the stars rocking a packed stadium, with groupies screaming from the front row. Electro artists stand behind pulsating racks of keyboards, mixers and laptops, keying out melodies and beatmatching tracks. Even from the front row, it is hard to see the musician's face. Most artists even choose to fill the stage with fog, to intensify the effect of the laser show going on around them.
At an electronic festival such as WWVII, the electro musician is just one part of the event, and not the main focus. The shows focus is a fan’s experience. The dedicated electronic fan spends weeks crafting their costume, and perfecting their hula-hoop skills. At an electro concert, you do not have a packed mass of people worshiping the guitar god on stage, but a group of fans that become friends through the experience of hearing their favorite songs together.
At about 1 o’ clock in the morning, BT took the stage and charged the crowd like only a Grammy-nominated artist can. His anthem inspired beats echoed through the re-purposed basketball stadium. Most outside the scene do not know his name, but BT has songs that appear in the movies “American Pie” and “Blade II.” He has also produced for such artists as 'N Sync and Sting. However, BT's greatest claim to fame is an audio technique of his own invention called Stutter Edit, which is expected to dominate pop music like auto-tune's sweep in the late millennium.
While these titans of electro ripped the air a new one, a group known as The Fire Technicians performed dances inspired by aboriginal peoples of the world, with hoops and batons ablaze. The Valhalla Dance Collective performed the Arabian art of belly dance as a synchronized group, with lasers and strobes to back them up.
In the wee hours of the morning, Marco V took the stage, as the dance floor ignited with energy few have witnessed and even fewer have been a part of. The fists of hundreds pumped to Marco V's remix of The Killers’ song “Mr. Brightside.” As the final electronic drumbeat echoed through the stadium, fans left feeling more satisfied than they were seven hours before.

Fellow Ska kids, I have an important announcement.
The Toasters will be at The Firebird this Tuesday (2.13) at 8pm! (doors - 7:30). Those less familiar with Ska should note that Ska is a musical genre that started in Jamaica in the 50s, moved to England for it's 2nd wave, and is fairly worldwide now. The third wave of ska features a walking baseline, upbeat rhythms, and lots of brass (trombones, trumpets, and saxophones).
The Toasters will be playing with Samuriot, All Things Aquatic, and Captain Dee and the Long Johns.
Want to listen to a radioshow on Ska? Popeye's Pirate Radioshow will be rocking out next Thursday the 16th from 10:30pm to 12am. Check out PPR's Ska Reboot on Facebook. No facebook? The PPR blog has all the information you need!

KSLU had a quite sticky time on Tuesday (1.31.12). It's not really possible to gather thirty college students in a room with snow cones and cotton candy and expect the room to stay clean. KSLU directors, DJs, committee members, and listeners played pool, ping pong, and stick hockey like the sugar fiends we were. Check out the pictures

Infected Mushroom is a hell of a band and I would suggest listening to their other music.
I'm sorry about the beginning of the track, the mic was unplugged and I didn't realize it. Also, I've been experimenting with under voice audio tracks, I'm still trying to get it right. I am also still tinkering with the KSLU live recording. Any advice is welcome.
